  Best Recycling Practices: Burnaby, BC Expended Recycling Program

The City of Burnaby is moving closer to achieving the regional goal of 70% waste diversion by 2015.  In response of changing the BC Recycling Regulation by Provincial Government the City of Burnaby introduced an Expended Residential Recycling Program.

 The expanded recycling program affects residential recycling only, not businesses or institutions (e.g. civic facilities colleges or schools).  Residents that receive City curbside or multi-family recycling collection can now recycle types of packaging that were previously not accepted in the city’s residential programs, and at the city’s Eco-Centre.

 As the City transitions into the expanded recycling program there will be additional changes to how recyclable materials will be collected through the City’s residential curbside and multi-family recycling programs.

 Burnaby City Council has already approved a new collection plan for residential curbside and multi-family recycling collection allowing residents to:

  •  Add the new allowed materials to their recycling containers;
  • Drop off plastic (stretchy), films (e.g. grocery bags, bread bags) and foam packaging (e.g. meat trays, foam packaging from electronics) to the City’s Eco-Centre;
  • Take back deposit beverage containers to a bottle depot.
