Light Recycling in British Columbia: Accepted Products and FAQs

Recycling E-Waste

ProductCare Recycling (https://www.productcare.org/) accepts a wide range of lighting products for recycling in British Columbia. These include light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, light fixtures, ballasts, and string lights. When dropping off lights for recycling, please keep the following in mind:

  1. Light Bulbs and Tubes: You can return up to 16 light bulbs (any combination of different types) and up to 16 tubes at once. If you have more than this, check our recycling locator for commercial volume locations.
  2. Light Fixtures: You can return up to 5 light fixtures at once, but some locations may accept more. For larger quantities, it's advisable to call and check with the recycling location beforehand.

Accepted Products: We accept the following types of lighting products for recycling:

  • Light bulbs: Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), fluorescent tubes (straight, curved, U, circular, square, etc.), high-intensity discharge (HIDs), special purpose bulbs, incandescent and halogen bulbs, miniature bulbs, light emitting diodes (LEDs), ultra high-performance (UHP) replacement projector lamps, UV and germicidal bulbs.
  • Lighting fixtures: Portable, hardwired, free-standing, and solar-powered lights, including bike lights, book lights, ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, electric candles, flashlights, floor lamps, night lights, outdoor fixtures, recessed/pot lights, security lights, string lights, table and desk lamps, wall fixtures, and work lights.
  • Lighting ballasts: Ballasts regulate or transfer electrical current/energy in light fixtures. We accept both PCB-containing and non-PCB-containing ballasts. PCB-containing ballasts require special handling and cannot be brought to a regular recycling location.

Not Accepted Products: The following lighting products are not accepted for recycling:

  • Alarms, phones, and devices for the visually impaired
  • Aquarium equipment
  • Artificial trees with integrated lights
  • Auto fixtures
  • Backlit signs
  • Black light equipment
  • Bug zappers
  • Camera and video accessories
  • Decorative key chains with integrated lights
  • Decorative sculptures and statues with lights for decorative purposes only
  • Electronic billboards
  • Equipment to heat food
  • Equipment to warm animals (e.g., brooder fixtures)
  • Exit signs without light heads
  • Fencing with integrated lights
  • Fountains with integrated lights
  • Garlands with integrated lights
  • Certain holiday decorations (except string lights and stake lights)
  • Horticultural lighting fixtures (e.g., greenhouse or grow lamp fixtures)
  • Laser pointers and other laser products
  • Lava lamps
  • Light-up shoes, hats, collars, and clothes
  • Marine and aeronautical fixtures
  • Medical, dental, and veterinarian lighting equipment
  • Mirror ball lights
  • Neon signs
  • Plasma balls
  • Propane and gas-powered lights
  • Signaling equipment (e.g., traffic lights and railway lights)
  • Strobe lights
  • Sunshine simulators
  • Tanning beds
  • Umbrellas with integrated lights
  • Vanity mirrors with lights

If you have any questions or need assistance with recycling PCB-containing ballasts, please reach out to us at pickup@lightrecycle.org. For all other lighting products, you can recycle them free of charge at any of our light recycling sites across British Columbia.
