The problem of waste is an enormous challenge facing all modern societies. In fact, it is a problem that affects the whole of our planet.
On the one hand we are producing and consuming more and more commodities, wastefully using up the earth's natural resources such as oil and wood. On the other hand, most manufactured products, when finished with, are simplythrown away. This means that the materials and energy used to make them are lost forever. Even worse, the methods we use to dispose of this waste can create poisons which pollute soil and water, and gases which threaten ourclimate through "the greenhouse effect."
One way to conserve the earth's natural resources is to cut down on wasteful production. Another is to make sure that we put materials to full use, not justonce, but as many times as possible. This is what recycling is all about. Itmeans thinking about the products we use and regularly throwaway; and finding ways to recover themand reuse them. This will help reduce the quantities offresh raw materials being stripped from the earth. And every ton of material recycled is a ton kept out of the already overflowing stream of waste.
The 'ABC of Paper Recycling for Kids' series looks at how one important material-paper-is recycled. It describes existing programs for collecting, reprocessing and reusing paper products. The articles of this series will explain and illustrate both the advantages and the limits of recycling, and gives ideas about what more could be done to reduce waste and increase reuse of paper.
