Recyclable Materials

As part of the City's commitment to the provincial waste reduction effort, the City of Burnaby, BC expanded it's Residential Recycling Program. 

The new Curbside Residential Recycling Program introduces the changes in sorting and separation of recyclables together with the Food Scrap Separation Ban and the significantly extended list of recyclable materials.  These and other City's environment protection initiatives are aimed at helping the city to meet the Provincial Regional Goal of 70% waste diversion. 

The Extended List of Recyclable Materials.   New items marked with an asterisk *

  • Gable-Top Cartons* -  used for milk or non-dairy beverages like soy milk, almond milk, rice beverage, etc. 
  • Aseptic Boxes or Cartons* -  used for cream, soup, vegetable broth, souse, etc.
  • Paper Cups* - used for hot and cold beverages.
  • Microwavable Bowls, Cups & Lids* - used for soup and entries.
  • Ice Cream Boxes & Frozen Dessert Boxes* - used for frozen products like ice cream, frozen yogurt, etc. 
  • Steel Cans & Lids - used for food, pet food, tins for cookies, tea, coffee, cocoa,  chocolates, etc.
  • Aerosol Cans & Cups* - used for shaving foam cream, deodorant, air fresheners, hair sprays, etc.
  • Spiral Wound Paper Cans & Lids*  - used for frozen juice concentrate,  potato chips, cookie dough,  coffee, nuts, baby formula, etc.
  • Aluminum Cans & Lids - used for canned meat and fish, pet food, etc.
  • Aluminum Foil & Foil Containers And Trays - used for pie trays, foil wrap, baking, roasting etc.
  • Plastic Jugs With Screw Tops & Caps - used formilk, cooking oil, laundry detergent and fabric softener; cleaning solutions, cleaning products, body care products, windshield washer fluid, etc.
  • Plastic Bottles With Caps - used for mouthwash, dish soap, shampoos, skin care products, vitamins, laundry products, etc. 
  • Plastic Jars & Lids - used for candies, nuts, jam, marmalade, vitamins, personal care products, cosmetics, etc. 
  • Plastic Clamshells * - used for berries, fruits, baked products, etc.
  • Plastic Trays & Tops* - used for cooked food such as grilled chicken, cooked meat or fish products, etc. 
  • Plastic Tubes & Lids -   margarine, spread, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. 
  • Plastic Cold Drink Cups & Lids* -  beverage take out cups with lids.
  • Plastic Garden Pots & Trays* - bedding plants, vegetable plants, seedlings, etc. 
  • Plastic Pails - used for laundry detergents, ice cream, etc.
  • Glass Bottles & Jars - glass bottles, jars, etc. 
  • Newspapers, Inserts, Flyers
  • Magazines, Catalogs - commercial flyers, community and daily newspapers.
  • Telephone Books - white pages, yellow pages, etc.
  • Paper Envelops, Greeting Cards, Gift Wrap - all types of paper products.
  • Home/Office Writing/Printing Paper - all types of paper products.
  • Cardboard Boxes - shipping and packing cardboard boxes, pizza boxes, etc.
  • Moulded Boxboard Packaging
  • Paper Bags - eggs cartons, take out beverage trays.
  • Pet Food Bags - brown bags, grocery sacks, prescription bags, etc. 
  • Plastic Foam Containers & Trays* - Bowl, cups, containers for take out food.
  • Plastic (stretchy) Film -  Clear or opaque plastic retail bags, dry cleaning bags, bread bags, produce bags, outer bags for diapers, feminine hygiene products; outer wrap for bulk paper products and soft drink and can flats; salt, wood pellet and garden product bags; overwrap on mattresses, furniture and electronic equipment.
