Proper Disposal of Office Paper

Computer Printout

Computer printout is the most valuable of the high-grade office paper. It may have colored bars and may be impact or nonimpact (laser) type. Many markets prefer to purchase colored-bar paper. Usually it is a green bar. Many markets prefer impact type or not to mix impact and laser. It is important in planning an office paper recycling program to determine precisely, what the market requires.

Computer printout is generally considered too valuable to mix with other high-grade papers and should be kept separate and free from contamination. Some manifold white ledger paper may appear to be similar to computer printout. Where there is not ablolute certainty, a market expert should be consulted.

White Ledger

White ledger should generally be considered any fine white writing, printing, typing, or copy paper containing no color other than black. The market must always be consulted for precise specifications. Certain qualities of book pages, completely separated from covers and bindings, might be allowed in this grade by certain markets.

Other Office Paper

Colored  ledger should generally be considered any fine writing or printing paper containing any color other than black. The ledger grades exclude paper that is treated, coated, padded, or heavily printed.
In banks and insurance companies, computer printout and white ledger average about 30% each and colored ledger averages about 5% of the total waste. In the general office, computer printout averages 7%; white ledger, 33%; and colored ledger, 6% of total waste. Seventeen percent of bank waste is tabulating cards.

Computer printout, white ledger, and colored ledger are high-grade de-inking papers which are used to make tissue and fine writing and printing papers. High-grade office paper is used to produce tissue, napkings, and paper towels more often than it is used to produce more office paper.

Other office grades that are recyclable, depending on market demand, are tabulating cards, file stock, and mixed grades. Banks and similar institutions produce significant quantities of tabulating cards, both manila and colored. File stock should be considered for recycling whenever files are purged. Mixed-grade recycling can be convenient for companies desiring tot to incur sorting expense.

Analysing  Recycling Solutions – Cost/Benefit Approach

Very often local Waste Haulers and Roll Off Container Rentals businesses offer recycling as a part of their service packages. It may be more cost effective to have an office paper recycler handle many of the steps in the process of paper collecting, hauling and recycling. In many cases, costs can be reduced by consulting with professionals to determine which steps in the process will be done internally and which should be contracted out.
