Biscayne Bay Floating Flowers

Rubbish Removal From Islands in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida
In 1980, Christo and Jenne-Claude undertaken an interesting endeavor in Biscayne Bay, in Miami, FL. After obtaining permissions from eight different institutions, people and organizations - including the City of North Miami, Florida, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Governor of Florida and the local environment protection agencies – they completed a project of removing 40 tons of trash from eleven small islands in the bay.

After removing rubbish they constructed nine enormous pink “belts” make of nylon that fit snugly around the islands and floated on the water’s surface. Seven wide belts surrounded seven single islands and two huge belts were placed around two pairs of islands. For two weeks the islands that had been ignored and so badly looked after became beautiful colors and shapes l like flowers floating on a lily pond.
